The main Belgian airport is located at Brussels ( airport code: BRU). All major carriers serve Brussels airport. From the airport you can travel easily by train. Check your train schedule here. The train station at the airport is at level -1, and is called BRUSSEL-NAT-LUCHTHAVEN. It will take you about one hour to get to GENT-SINT-PIETERS. You could of course also grab a taxi, it will take about an hour as well and cost you a lot. Do not take a taxi during rush hours as traffic jams are inevitable then (between 7.00-9.30 and 16.30-19.30).
If your supervisor ran out of money you could also take a budget carrier like Ryanair which flies to Brussels-South/Charleroi (CRL). From the airport take Bus A to the train station CHARLEROI-SUD.
From any train station, you can take the train to GENT-SINT-PIETERS. Look here for your schedule. From the train station you can grab a taxi or take bus numer 65 or 67 direction Gent-Handelsmarkt (more information on where to find the right bus, see below).
Take any bus direction GENT-SINT-PIETERS. Near the main entrance of the station (on your left side when facing the station) you go to perron 21 (Look here [pdf]). There you take bus number 65 or 67 direction Gent-Handelsmarkt. Get off at the Proeftuinstraat, which is the stop directly after the bridge over the highway. You can ask the bus-driver. The drive is supposed to take about 15 minutes. Look here [pdf] or here (website bus company) for a timetable. More information about the Gent bus lines can be found here [pdf].
